Juggling Elephants
  By: DMB
This is so much like our lives, always trying to fit everything in. As a ringmaster, we must decide what is the most important task to concentrate on first. Organization is most important, getting constructive feedback and not alway taking everything to serious.

As in a three ring circus, the book identifies the three rings of our lives: professional, relationships, and self time. We need to decide which ring we should be in, what act we should focus on and the purpose of that act. The importance of being the ringmaster and keeping the three rings connected, and still deciding whether this act belongs in our circus/life. This book helps us realize the main acts and determine the less important acts to get out of our circus. It also emphasizes the importance of an intermission to rejuvenate ourself and refocus.

This book helped me prioritize the things in my life. Not only with work but on a personal level. We often feel like there is never enough time, but if we look at whether it belongs in our circus we can make much better use of our time.

This was such a fun book to read, and helpful! It reminded me that we can't be everything to everybody. And there is always going to be a to-do list. The trick is to give your full attention to the ring you're in and decide which act you should focusing on. You are your own Ringmaster!

Just as we were getting plans together to host our annual Circus event, a team member told us about this GREAT book and how true these main concepts are: A ringmaster cannot be in all 3 rings at once; Intermission is an Essential part of any Good circus; and The key to success of any circus is having Quality Acts in all 3 rings. It's a fun reminder for all of us!

Our office has been reading several books this summer - Juggling Elephants is a great reminder of the balancing act we all have in our lives - juggling professional, relational and self tasks. The trick is to focus on each when the spotlight should be on that area and then move to the next Act of the "Circus" when it's time to move on.
